Weekly Shonen Magazine "Yellow Gloves Ⅹ "
Original story by Yasunori Kawauchi, Kodansha published (1966)
Yellow Gloves X is a Japanese masked-hero manga illustrated by Jirō Kuwata, based on an original story by Yasunori Kawauchi, the creator of Moonlight Mask. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine (Kodansha) throughout 1966, from issue 1 to issue 51, with an additional serialization in Bokura magazine.
The mysterious masked hero belongs to the tradition of Japanese crime-fighting vigilantes that preceded the superhero and tokusatsu boom of the 1970s. With his distinctive black mask, X-shaped emblem and dramatic cape, Yellow Gloves X combines the visual language of Japanese masked heroes with the dynamic action storytelling for which Kuwata became famous.
The series occupies an interesting position in Kuwata's career. Following the success of 8 Man (1963–1965), he began Yellow Gloves X shortly before his celebrated Japanese adaptation of Batman (1966–1967). Both series were published during 1966, demonstrating Kuwata's remarkable productivity and his importance in the development of Japanese superhero manga.
This original chapter title page comes from the later part of the serialization. Its striking composition combines a large portrait of the masked hero with a smaller action scene, showcasing Kuwata's clean linework, bold contrasts and cinematic sense of design.
Protecting the innocent and defeating evil! A new champion of justice is born: Yellow Gloves X!
The yellow gloves serve as a warning against evil. The colour yellow symbolizes caution, a signal to prevent danger, while the gloves themselves represent a handshake of trust and friendship.
The letter X serves as a reminder to those who have received the warning of the yellow gloves, urging them to reflect on their actions and understand why they were targeted.
In a world where the sense of justice is fading, Yellow Gloves X emerges not merely to fight evil, but to change the hearts of wrongdoers and help create a better, more beautiful world.
