Captain Harlock, created by Leiji Matsumoto, is one of the great icons of Japanese science-fiction manga. The character took his mature form in the 1977–79 manga and gained worldwide popularity through the 1978 animated adaptation: the solitary, melancholic space pirate, instantly recognizable by his scarred face, eyepatch, cape and the skull emblem of the Arcadia.

Eldred worked in close visual dialogue with both of Harlock's core sources: Matsumoto's own manga linework and the character designs of the 1978 TV series, whose art director Kazutaka Miyatake had also designed the extraordinarily complex Arcadia, a ship Eldred has since described as one of the hardest things he ever had to learn to draw consistently!
