Makoto Satō (Tokyo, 1963-) is a Japanese manga artist whose unconventional background has shaped his manga into something deeply human.
Before entering the world of manga,he studied architecture and animation, two directions that formed his sensitivity.
His debut in manga came by responding to a small magazine ad and thus began working as an assistant to Yumiko Suzuki and Yukio Okada, where he further developed his meticulous approach to storytelling.
His first notable work appeared in 1995 with Personal World, followed by Boxed Girl in 1997, which won an award at the Manga Open and revealed his talent for blending social themes with emotional intimacy.

In 1999, Satō released what would become his most important work: Satorare (published in French as Transparent), a subtle and unsettling story about individuals whose thoughts involuntarily escape their minds and become audible to those around them.

The manga was met with critical and public success, leading to a live-action film adaptation in 2001 and a TV drama in 2002.
Satō’s drawing style is widely praised for its realism and emotional clarity.
He captures the mindset of his characters through subtle gestures, (awkward) silences, and visual restraint. The result is a form of storytelling that feels intimate, emotionally connected and strangely quiet but behind this quietness lies manga that is deeply humane.
