Kazuhiro Kumagai began his career as an assistant to Nonki Miyasu
. He is a Japanese manga artist best known for creating the historical action manga; Samurai Gun and its sequel Samurai Gun Gekkō. He also worked on other titles such as Monte Cristo and マイティジャック The Shadow Force.

Samurai Gun was serialized from 1997 to 2002 in Weekly Young Jump and related magazines, and collected in seven volumes. The sequel Samurai Gun Gekkō followed from 2000 to 2003 in Ultra Jump. Together, these works showcase Kumagai’s flair for blending historical drama with intense action.

Samurai Gun is a dark, action-packed manga set in a turbulent version of late feudal Japan with a striking twist: samurai wield guns instead of swords. The story follows a secret group of highly trained rebels, the “Samurai Gun”, who fight against an oppressive regime using firearms and covert tactics more akin to ninja than traditional warriors.

Part historical drama, part spy thriller, the series mixes political intrigue, rebellion, and early industrial-era aesthetics. Known for its gritty tone and moral ambiguity, Samurai Gun stands out for its unique fusion of samurai imagery with modern weaponry.

The series was adapted into a 13-episode anime in 2004, helping introduce Kumagai’s work to an international audience
