Jirō Ōta 太田二郎 (1923-1982) was a Japanese mangaka and children’s book author born in Tokyo’s Hatchōbori district. After graduating, he explored a variety of creative fields, working in publishing and for a while even as a painter of movie posters, before making his manga debut in 1941 with Aesop’s Manga (イソップまんが).

Ota’s career was primarily in children’s magazines, particularly during the vibrant 1950's > 1970's era. He became known for his gentle, appealing art style and stories designed to captivate young readers. His work was part of the early post‑war kodomo manga boom, a movement in which artists created friendly, wholesome narratives for children, laying the foundation for modern children’s manga.

His art is distinguished by soft, expressive line work, humorous character designs and stories that are playful, kind‑hearted, and easy for kids to follow.
Ota’s animal manga played a central role in shaping kids magazine culture during the 1950's & 1960s (before the dominance of shonen manga serialized in weekly magazines)

In recognition of his contributions to children’s manga, Ota won the 5th Shogakukan Manga Award in 1960, largely for his popular work in children’s publications.

One of his best-known works from his early career is Ganbare Ganta, which began serialization around 1954 in Shōnen magazine, published by Kobunsha, a prominent children’s magazine of the era. The series follows a young sumo enthusiast named Ganta, whose name and the title Ganbare literally mean “Do your best, Ganta!”
The tone and original art show his enthusiasm, his humor and the everyday adventures of a child growing up and improving the qualities of post‑war kodomo !
