Chōdenshi Bioman was broadcast in Japan from 4 February 1984 to 26 January 1985 and was the 8th entry in Toei's Super Sentai franchise. Five colour-coded heroes fight collectively using individual weapons, coordinated attacks and the giant robot Bio Robo. Hosoi's manga adaptation appeared in TV Land from March 1984 to February 1985, almost exactly paralleling the television broadcast.

The series has a particularly important European history;
Bioman became the first Super Sentai series broadcast on French television, beginning on Canal+ on 1 July 1985, before reaching a much larger audience on TF1's Club Dorothée from 2 September 1987. Its French success was such that subsequent Sentai series were marketed there as Bioman 2 and Bioman 3. Hosoi's manga connects directly with a Japanese popular-culture phenomenon that became exceptionally recognizable to a generation of French and Francophone European viewers, several years before Power Rangers.
