To whom it may concern, for those who love manga as much as we do ...
And for those willing to discover the purest in Manga Art !
Sultans of Manga is opening a Manga Art Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium
September 28 | 1 > 8 PM
Sultans of Manga is devoted to Shōwa era manga or to be more specific: the Original Art of Japanese mangaka drawn between 1926 and 1989.
This is not only the period of the reign of Emperor Shōwa (commonly known as Emperor Hirohito), this period also includes the presence of Osamu Tezuka, the god of Manga (Manga no Kami-sama)
From his birth in 1928 until his passing away in 1989, his influence is undeniably omnipresent in Japan and let's be honest, the rest of the world!
We chose this period for its great significance in Manga history and to be honest again; a bit out of selfishness due to our unquestionable love for the classics!
We find this period to be inspiring, creative and even revolutionary! So for us it's not just the feel and smell of old paper but the message we read in every line drawn and how we want to make the world understand where it has brought us !
That doesn't mean that anything published after 1989 isn't worth our attention, it's just that we have to draw the line somewhere and we drew it under the two kanji characters in Shōwa 昭和
Our webstore already offers a large variety of artists ranging from the somewhat famous to the obscurest of underground | Our gallery will be a little different offering more insight into those artists ...
Insight to be found in our small yet dedicated library, insight to be found in our presentation folders, portfolios and our publications but even more visible on our walls.
For our opening we have carefully selected over 100 pieces of Art not only showing the diversity of what we have to offer but also giving you the opportunity to fall in love, as we have, with Original Manga Art from the Shōwa period!
This first selection of 100 pieces will not only give you insight into these mangaka but hopefully convince you that what we are trying to bring is a genuine contribution to elevating Manga within the ARTS without becoming too exclusive and even unaffordable.
We are very proud to be the first exclusively manga Art Gallery outside of Japan and we are especially proud to be opening our gallery in Antwerp, Belgium.
We find Antwerp to have a vibrant art scene with a diversity of renowned museums, galleries, art schools, events and projects, collectors and enthusiasts.
When we stumbled upon our 'Tower of Manga' at the Guldenberg, we instantly fell in love with the building. Yes, it is a 3-storey tower with curved walls and a lot of windows but the possibilities are endless! Come check it out for yourself.
You are courteously invited to attend the Grand Opening on September 28 | 1 > 8 PM ... or, upon appointment, during the introductory week (leading up to the Grand Opening) for a press-related meet & greet with either Ben or Alain
So, no matter if you are a manga aficionado or a gaijin journalist, contact us for a tour around the tower and a friendly Manga related talk.
